Paris St-Germain Show Support for Nuno Mendes Amidst Racist Abuse
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) has expressed strong support for defender Nuno Mendes following an incident where he was subjected to racist abuse online after PSG’s 3-1 victory over Brest in Ligue 1 on Saturday.
Mendes, a 22-year-old Portuguese left-back, became a target for online racial insults after his mistake led to Brest’s first-half penalty. Despite Mendes conceding the penalty by bringing down Ludovic Ajorque, PSG went on to secure the win with goals from Ousmane Dembélé and Fabian Ruiz, maintaining their perfect start to the league season.
In response to the abuse, PSG has publicly condemned the racial insults and reaffirmed their commitment to combating racism. The club issued a statement expressing their firm stance against racism, antisemitism, and any form of discrimination.
They emphasized their dedication to creating an environment of inclusion, respect, and unity both on and off the pitch. PSG also stated that they are collaborating with the relevant authorities and organizations to ensure that those responsible for the racial abuse are held accountable.
Nuno Mendes, who has made 80 appearances for PSG since his initial loan move from Sporting Lisbon in August 2021—before making the transfer permanent in May 2022—has received the full backing of his club.
PSG’s stance reflects their broader commitment to upholding the values of tolerance and respect, crucial in the fight against discrimination in football.
