Harry Kane Shatters Records with Historic Champions League Performance
Harry Kane, the prolific England captain, delivered a record-breaking performance for Bayern Munich in their 9-2 demolition of Dinamo Zagreb, marking a historic night in the Champions League. The 31-year-old forward’s remarkable feat not only helped Bayern become the first team to score nine goals in a single Champions League match but also saw Kane achieve several significant milestones.
Kane now holds the record for the most goals scored by an English player in Champions League or European Cup history, with 33 goals in 45 appearances, surpassing Wayne Rooney’s previous record of 30 goals. He is also the first English player to score four goals in a Champions League game, and the first to achieve a hat-trick or more for a non-English team in the competition.
In addition, Kane became the first player to score a hat-trick of penalties in a Champions League or European Cup match. His performance saw him net his 50th, 51st, 52nd, and 53rd goals for Bayern Munich, reaching this tally in just 50 appearances. This hat-trick was also the 24th of his career and marked the fifth time he has scored consecutive trebles.
Despite a goal disallowed and a missed opportunity that could have seen him join the ranks of Lionel Messi, Luiz Adriano, and Erling Haaland with five goals in a single Champions League game, Kane’s contribution was monumental. His goal tally this season stands at nine goals in five games for Bayern, alongside two goals in two appearances for England.
Reflecting on his achievements, Kane shared his delight, mentioning how he plans to keep the match ball for his young son, Louis. He also spoke about breaking Rooney’s record, acknowledging the significance of being compared to one of England’s greatest players.
Former England defender Stephen Warnock praised Kane’s professionalism and intelligence on the field, while also addressing past criticisms and the challenges Kane faced during Euro 2024. Warnock expressed confidence that Kane will continue to excel at Bayern Munich and refuted any doubts about his capabilities.
Owen Hargreaves also weighed in, emphasizing that Kane’s exceptional level of play is evident and suggesting that trophies will follow in due time. Despite his impressive goal tally, Kane is still in search of major silverware, having previously experienced disappointments in finals with England and Tottenham.
Kane’s latest performance solidifies his status as one of the game’s top strikers and adds another chapter to his illustrious career.
