Liverpool Manager Arne Slot Reflects on Shock Defeat and Impressive Champions League Win
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed disbelief over his team’s unexpected 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, especially in light of their dominant 3-1 victory over AC Milan in the Champions League just three days later. Slot, who was overseeing his first European match as Liverpool’s manager, remarked on the stark contrast in performances between the two games.
In Milan, Liverpool responded to an early goal by AC Milan’s Christian Pulisic with goals from Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk, and Dominik Szoboszlai, showcasing their resilience and attacking prowess. The performance was a significant turnaround from their previous loss to Forest, which Slot had described as a “big setback.”
Reflecting on the Champions League match, Slot said, “Losing Saturday was a blow, and to be 1-0 down early tonight, you are wondering how we react. But if you can play so well, it is unbelievable you lose to Forest at home if you can play like this today.”
Liverpool’s win against Milan marked their first European victory without Jurgen Klopp since February 2015. Despite a rocky start with Pulisic’s early goal, Liverpool quickly regained control. Mohamed Salah was particularly lively, hitting the bar twice, while Cody Gakpo was denied by AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan on two occasions.
Konate and Van Dijk’s first-half headers, followed by Szoboszlai’s tap-in, turned the tide for Liverpool, who showed their trademark high press and effective possession play. Former Newcastle and England striker Alan Shearer praised Liverpool’s resilience and belief in their game plan, describing the performance as a “good night’s work.”
Former Liverpool full-back Stephen Warnock noted that Liverpool fans might need time to adjust to Slot’s style, which differs slightly from Klopp’s more chaotic approach. Warnock compared Slot’s tactics to those of Arsenal and Manchester City, suggesting a more measured approach.
Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk acknowledged the similarities between Slot and Klopp’s philosophies, emphasizing that while the new manager has his own ideas, the core principles of Liverpool’s play remain consistent. Van Dijk expressed optimism about Slot’s tenure, highlighting the need for squad unity and respect.
As Liverpool continues to adapt under Slot, the impressive win in Milan has provided a positive boost and a sign of potential under the new management.
