Wojciech Szczesny Joins Barcelona on Short-Term Deal Following Retirement
Former Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has signed with Barcelona until the end of the season, just over a month after announcing his retirement. The 34-year-old Polish international revealed his decision to retire on August 27, following the termination of his contract with Juventus.
Barcelona’s need for a goalkeeper arose when first-choice Marc-Andre ter Stegen sustained a serious knee injury during a 5-1 victory against Villarreal last month. Under La Liga regulations, clubs are allowed to sign free agents outside of the transfer window to replace players facing long-term injuries.
Szczesny, who began his career at Arsenal at the age of 16, made 181 appearances for the Gunners and also had stints at Brentford, Roma, and Juventus. During his seven years in Turin, he featured in 252 matches, winning three Serie A titles and three Coppa Italia trophies.
He earned 84 caps for Poland, representing his country at four European Championships and two World Cups. Upon announcing his retirement, Szczesny stated, “Today, though my body still feels ready for challenges, my heart is not there anymore. I feel that right now it is time to give all of my attention to my family.”
Szczesny is expected to make his debut for Barcelona against Alaves in La Liga on Sunday. Despite a recent 4-2 loss to Osasuna, Barcelona remains at the top of the table with seven wins from eight matches. Additionally, Hansi Flick’s team secured a convincing 5-0 victory over Young Boys in the Champions League on Tuesday.
