Swedish Prosecutors Close Rape Inquiry Allegedly Linked to Kylian Mbappé
Prosecutors in Sweden have officially closed an investigation into an alleged rape case that Swedish media had linked to Kylian Mbappé, the captain of the French national football team and current Real Madrid forward.
The alleged incident reportedly occurred on October 10 at a hotel in Stockholm and also involved claims of two cases of sexual harassment. However, Marina Chirakova of the Swedish Prosecution Authority stated that the inquiry was halted due to insufficient evidence to proceed.
Mbappé, one of the sport’s biggest global stars, was never formally named or notified by Swedish prosecutors as being under suspicion. Despite this, several prominent Swedish media outlets, including Aftonbladet, Expressen, and public broadcaster SVT, identified him as a suspect.
Mbappé Responds to Allegations
Speaking about the case for the first time on the French television show Clique, Mbappé categorically denied involvement, stating, “I haven’t received anything, no summons… I’m not involved.”
His lawyer, Marie-Alix Canu-Bernard, had earlier condemned the media reports as defamatory, reiterating that the player had no knowledge of the complaint. She emphasized that Mbappé is constantly surrounded by others, minimizing any risk of such allegations.
Details of the Case
Reports suggested police collected evidence, including clothing, from the Bank Hotel in Stockholm, where Mbappé had stayed during his visit to the Swedish capital. Despite these efforts, prosecutor Chirakova concluded that the evidence was not strong enough to justify further action.
Mbappé’s Career Continues to Shine
While the case unfolded, Mbappé continued to excel on the pitch. The 24-year-old recently scored his 50th Champions League goal, adding to his illustrious career achievements. After transferring from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) earlier this year, he has remained in the spotlight as one of the world’s best players.
Mbappé is a World Cup winner, having lifted the trophy in 2018 as a teenager. In the 2022 final, he became the first player to score a hat-trick in a World Cup final since 1966, though France lost to Argentina in a penalty shootout.
The Paris-born forward, who once formed a superstar attacking trio with Lionel Messi and Neymar at PSG, also placed third in the Ballon d’Or and Best FIFA Men’s Player awards last year.
