Borussia Dortmund in Talks to Loan Chelsea Defender Renato Veiga
Borussia Dortmund has initiated discussions with Chelsea over a potential loan move for defender Renato Veiga. The 21-year-old Portugal international has had a somewhat limited role at Chelsea, often playing as a left-back, covering for Marc Cucurella. Although Chelsea would prefer a permanent transfer for Veiga, an obligation to buy at the end of the season could meet their conditions.
While Chelsea has not actively encouraged Dortmund’s approach, the Blues have already turned down a loan offer from Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this month. Veiga, who joined Chelsea in a £12 million deal from FC Basel during the summer, has featured regularly in Enzo Maresca’s squad, particularly in cup competitions, including a 5-0 win against Morecambe in the FA Cup third round on Saturday.
However, Veiga is believed to be seeking more central playing time, a preference he has expressed given his primary role as a left-back so far this season. Although Maresca has publicly stated that he “trusted” Veiga, the young defender was dropped for a home match against Fulham in late December due to what was described as a “technical decision.”
Meanwhile, Chelsea is looking to sell other players in January, including Ben Chilwell, Carney Chukwuemeka, and Cesare Casadei, but Maresca has denied that the club is pushing out players such as Veiga, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Axel Disasi, despite ongoing interest from other clubs.
Dortmund’s interest in Veiga highlights their search for defensive reinforcements, with the player potentially playing a more central role if he makes the move to the Bundesliga club.
