Children Engage in Knife Crime Awareness at ‘Ballin’ with a Bobby’ Basketball Tournament
Youngsters in Essex had the opportunity to discuss knife crime and safety concerns while enjoying some competitive basketball with local police officers. The event, named Ballin’ with a Bobby, took place at the University of Essex, where more than 100 children participated in the summer initiative.
The tournament, aimed at primary and secondary school students, was part of a broader effort to foster community engagement. It was organized by Active Essex and hosted at the Essex Sport Arena, featuring professional players from the Essex Rebels who played alongside the children and police officers.
PC Dex Adams from Colchester’s community policing team emphasized the importance of this initiative, calling it a “great opportunity” to address significant concerns in a more relaxed setting. “It’s a chance to talk about knife crime and stop and search in a controlled, respectable environment,” Adams explained, highlighting how these discussions could help divert children away from negative influences.
Participants not only enjoyed the sport but also received medals and meals, creating a fun yet educational experience for everyone. In addition, older attendees were invited to attend sessions focusing on knife crime and violence, bringing attention to the serious issues facing youth today.
Event organizer Jennifer Stanhope, from the University of Essex, expressed her joy at seeing the positive impact of the tournament. “Inspiring the next generation is what it’s all about,” Stanhope said. “These events build confidence, create connections, and give children a sense of belonging through sports.”
By combining education, sports, and community interaction, Ballin’ with a Bobby successfully created a safe space for children to learn, grow, and engage with their local law enforcement.
