Daniel Ricciardo Replaced by Liam Lawson at Red Bull for Remainder of 2024 Season
Daniel Ricciardo has been replaced by Liam Lawson for the remaining six races of the 2024 Formula 1 season. The decision comes after Red Bull management expressed concerns about Ricciardo’s performance. The 35-year-old Australian, who returned to Red Bull last season, will make way for the 22-year-old New Zealander, allowing Lawson to be evaluated for Red Bull’s 2025 line-up.
Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies praised Ricciardo’s contribution, saying, “Daniel has brought a lot of experience and talent to the team with a fantastic attitude,” while highlighting his valuable role in fostering team spirit. However, Mekies noted the need for change, especially with Lawson having performed admirably under pressure during his previous stints.
Ricciardo, whose jovial nature has endeared him to fans, shared an emotional statement on Instagram, reflecting on his career and expressing gratitude to fans and teams. He concluded, “Until the next adventure.”
Lawson’s Rise and Future Prospects
Liam Lawson stepped in last season after Ricciardo broke his wrist at the Dutch Grand Prix, scoring two points with a ninth-place finish at the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix. Mekies expressed confidence in Lawson, stating that his experience last year would make this transition smoother. With Yuki Tsunoda already confirmed for 2025, Lawson’s performance in the final six races will determine whether he secures a permanent seat at Red Bull or the senior team.
Ricciardo’s Career Journey
Ricciardo’s career has had notable highs, particularly during his seven-year tenure with Red Bull from 2014 to 2020, where he earned seven race wins and became known for his daring overtakes. However, his departure from Red Bull in 2018, prompted by a perceived shift in team focus towards Max Verstappen, marked the beginning of his decline. After brief stints with Renault and McLaren, where results were mixed, Red Bull brought Ricciardo back as a reserve driver before promoting him to a race seat last season. Despite flashes of his former self, Red Bull ultimately decided to look elsewhere for the future.
Ricciardo’s career will be remembered for his resilience, thrilling victories, and his enduring popularity among fans and colleagues alike.
Looming Uncertainty for Sergio Perez
Liam Lawson’s promotion further puts pressure on Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, whose performance has been under scrutiny throughout the 2024 season. Although Perez’s contract runs until 2026, the arrival of a promising young driver like Lawson could influence Red Bull’s decisions about their future lineup.
With six races left this season, Lawson has an opportunity to cement his place in the team and potentially earn a promotion to the senior Red Bull squad in the near future.
