Encouraging Young People to Join Wheelchair Basketball: An Illustrated Guide

Lecturers from the University of Lincoln and Loughborough University have launched an illustrated guide aimed at encouraging young individuals to get involved in wheelchair basketball. Titled The Wheelchair Basketball Journey, this resource highlights three key aspects that people with disabilities may encounter as they develop their skills in the sport.

The guide has been developed by Dr. Lesley Sharpe, a Lecturer in Sports Sociology at the University of Lincoln, alongside Professor Vicky Tolfrey and Dr. Janine Coates from Loughborough University. Dr. Sharpe, who contributed the artwork for the project, explained that the initiative seeks to make their research findings more accessible to a younger audience.

“We aimed to create an innovative, social media-focused project that utilizes our collective findings to represent, promote, and connect disabled young people with wheelchair basketball opportunities,” said Dr. Sharpe.

Designed for easy sharing across social media platforms, this guide is expected to help raise awareness and interest in wheelchair basketball among young people. The project has received funding from the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and has been supported by British Wheelchair Basketball, highlighting a commitment to inclusivity in sports.
