Sam Konstas Set for Historic Debut in Boxing Day Test Against India

Sam Konstas is poised to become Australia’s youngest men’s Test batting debutant in 71 years when he takes the field against India in the Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. At just 19 years old, the New South Wales batter replaces Nathan McSweeney, who struggled in the series with an average of 14.40 across six innings.

The series is currently tied 1-1, with two matches left to play, adding immense significance to the Boxing Day Test.

Australia coach Andrew McDonald expressed confidence in Konstas, praising his composure and form. “He’s composed, relaxed, knows his game is in a good place at the moment. He’ll play Boxing Day,” McDonald said. “Boxing Day, the biggest stage. He might as well get that one out of the way early.”

Historic Feat for Konstas

Konstas’ debut will make him Australia’s youngest Test batting debutant since Ian Craig in 1953. His recent performances in the Sheffield Shield, where he scored two centuries against South Australia, earned him comparisons to legends like Ricky Ponting, who achieved a similar feat in 1993.

Tactical Move Against India

McDonald revealed that the decision to include Konstas is part of a strategic move to challenge India’s bowlers, who have dominated the series so far. “We want to throw a different challenge at India,” he said. While McSweeney remains capable of playing at Test level, the top-order concerns prompted the change.

Fitness Updates and Line-up Changes

  • Travis Head: The left-hander, who has been Australia’s standout batter with 409 runs and two centuries in the series, is expected to play despite a quad strain.
  • Scott Boland: The paceman is set to replace the injured Josh Hazlewood.
  • Mitchell Marsh: The all-rounder is confirmed fit and ready to feature.

The final playing XI will be announced by skipper Pat Cummins on Wednesday. The match begins at 23:30 GMT, with Australia looking to regain the upper hand in the series.
