Williams has decided to replace Logan Sargeant with academy driver Franco Colapinto for the remainder of the 2024 Formula 1 season. Sargeant, 23, has faced significant pressure this year, and his performance issues culminated in a heavy crash during third practice at the Dutch Grand Prix, which led to substantial car damage and prevented him from participating in qualifying.

The announcement follows the earlier confirmation that Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz will join Williams for the 2025 season to partner Alex Albon. Williams stated that Sargeant will “remain in the Williams family” despite the mid-season change.

Franco Colapinto, a 21-year-old Formula 2 driver, expressed his excitement about the opportunity, describing it as “what dreams are made of.” Colapinto, who is currently sixth in the F2 drivers’ championship, is eager to contribute to the team’s mission to return to the front of the grid.

After the crash at Zandvoort, team principal James Vowles explored options with Mercedes and Red Bull regarding their reserve drivers. However, Red Bull’s Liam Lawson was not available for all remaining races, and Mercedes decided not to disrupt their Italian protege Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s preparations. Williams had also previously declined the chance to hire Mercedes reserve driver Mick Schumacher.

Vowles emphasized that the decision to replace Sargeant was difficult, especially given the team’s recent upgrade to the car. He noted the importance of maximizing points in a competitive midfield and thanked Sargeant for his dedication and positive attitude.

Sargeant, who made his F1 debut in 2023, has scored just one championship point from 36 Grand Prix entries.

Colapinto will make his debut for Williams at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza this weekend.
