Yorkshire Appoint Anthony McGrath as New Head Coach on a Five-Year Deal

Yorkshire have named former captain Anthony McGrath as their new head coach, bringing him back to Headingley where he spent his entire playing career. McGrath joins the White Rose after nine successful years at Essex, where he served as assistant coach, head coach, and director of cricket. He will officially take over from Ottis Gibson on November 1.

McGrath, 49, had an illustrious playing career with Yorkshire, captaining the team between 2008 and 2009, and winning the County Championship in 2001. He also represented England in four Tests and 14 One-Day Internationals.

At Essex, McGrath helped guide the club to notable successes, including promotion from Division Two in 2016, and the County Championship titles in 2017 and 2019. Under his leadership, Essex also achieved a historic double by winning both the County Championship and the T20 Blast in 2019.

Yorkshire’s interim CEO Sanjay Patel praised McGrath for his commitment to youth development and his reputation for leading teams that play “attractive, attacking cricket.”

In reflecting on his time at Essex, McGrath described the 2019 double as the standout moment of his coaching career and expressed confidence in Essex’s continued competitiveness.

Now returning to Yorkshire, McGrath is determined to deliver success to the club’s passionate supporters. “I know the history of this great club and the passion of the members and supporters, and I am absolutely determined to develop a team capable of delivering the success they deserve,” he said.
