PGMOL Investigates Premier League Referee David Coote Over Misconduct Allegations

The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) has emphasized the importance of Premier League referee David Coote’s “welfare” as its investigation into allegations of misconduct continues.

Coote, 42, was suspended last week after a video surfaced in which he appeared to make disparaging comments about former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp. Although the video has not been verified by the BBC, it is being treated as authentic by the PGMOL.

In addition to this, the Sun newspaper published images reportedly taken during the summer’s European Championship, alleging they show Coote using a white powder through a rolled-up banknote. These images remain unverified, and Coote has yet to comment publicly.

“We are following an internal process and taking the allegations into David Coote’s conduct very seriously,” PGMOL stated. “His welfare continues to be important to us, and he is aware of the support network available to him.”

Coote, who has officiated Premier League matches since 2018 and worked at the Euros in a professional capacity, is also under investigation by UEFA and the Football Association, both of which have suspended him pending the outcomes.

The case underscores the scrutiny surrounding professional referees and the need for accountability while maintaining their well-being during such challenging circumstances.
