Alec Stewart to Take on New Part-Time Role at Surrey from January

Surrey’s director of cricket, Alec Stewart, will transition into a new role as the county champions’ high-performance cricket advisor starting in January 2024. The former England captain, who has led Surrey for 11 years as director of cricket, will step down from his full-time position in December but will continue contributing to the club on a part-time basis for a set number of days each year.

During his tenure, Surrey claimed the County Championship title four times, and 12 players from the club went on to represent England. The 61-year-old Stewart will now collaborate closely with head coach Gareth Batty and captain Rory Burns as the club moves forward without appointing a new director of cricket.

Stewart expressed his ongoing dedication to Surrey, stating, “Everyone knows my love of the club and what it means to me, and I’m very pleased that the club wanted me to continue in this new role.”

Surrey chair Oli Slipper highlighted the importance of retaining Stewart’s expertise, remarking that they have found a role that benefits both Stewart and the club, ensuring his legacy continues at the county.
